Before you book or pay a vendor's bill, you need to know whether the vendor is a registered micro or small enterprise — and since when. The answer decides your payment deadline, your tax deduction and your disclosures.
Under the MSMED Act, dues to a micro or small enterprise must be paid within 15 days, or within the agreed period of up to 45 days. Delay attracts compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate.
Under Section 43B(h), an expense owed to a micro or small enterprise is allowed only when it is paid within the MSMED Act time limit. Medium enterprises are outside this rule — classification matters.
